Saturday Boredom Busters

Luverne, MN

More than 2,500 students from Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa will compete in the 64th Tri-State Band Festival in Luverne, Minnesota.   17 bands will perform in the parade beginning at 9:30 am on Luverne's Main Street.  13 bands will take part in the field competition beginning at 12:30 pm at Luverne High School.

The South Dakota Festival of Books includes several gatherings of authors and book-lovers in downtown Sioux Falls.  Events include exhibits on display from 9 am to 5 pm at the Holiday Inn City Centre.  There will be a Dakota Writing Marathon from 10 am to 2 pm at the Main Branch of Siouxland Libraries.  A panel discussion on the Dakotas after 125 years will go from 7-8:30 pm at the Orpheum Theatre.

Help in the fight against Lou Gehrig's Disease by taking part in the Walk to Defeat ALS.  Check-in time at Sertoma Park is 8:30 am.  The 2-mile walk starts at 10 am.

Celebrate National Alpaca Farms Days at a couple of farms in northwest Iowa this weekend.  You can learn about raising alpacas during free open houses at the Triple Tree and the Pair-a-dice Ranch in Sheldon, Iowa.  Today's hours are from 9 am to 5 pm.  Sunday's hours are from noon to 5 pm.

You can see the Heartland Country Corn Maze from the air this weekend.  Helicopter rides will be available today from noon to 8 pm.  The maze is located on South Dakota Highway 11 near Harrisburg.

The King Turkey Corn Maze in Worthington, MN is every weekend through October.  The hours are from 11 am to dusk.  Admission is $9, free for ages 4 and under.  The maze is located just north of Interstate 90 at Exit 43.

West Nidaros Lutheran Church in Crooks is hosting a Harvest Festival Supper from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.  The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children, $2 for kids 6 and under.  Carry-out will be available.  A Bake & Craft Sale begins at 4 pm.

A benefit fundraiser for cancer patient Tim Irvine will be held at the American Legion in Hartford beginning at 5 pm.  Activities include a raffle, silent auction, minnow races and a dance.

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary is hosting a Pillow Cleaning at the VFW Club in Worthington. MN.  Drop off your pillows to be cleaned, deodorized, sanitized and fluffed from 7 am to noon.  The VFW club is located at 1117 2nd Avenue in Worthington.

Purchase fresh produce and many other items for sale at the Sioux Falls Farmers Market, across the street from Falls Park.    The hours are from 8 am to 1 pm. 

Vendors are also selling their produce and baked goods at the Sioux Empire Farmers Market at the 8th & Railroad Center on the East Bank of downtown Sioux Falls.  Hours are from 8 am to 1 pm.

It's the final weekend of New American Garden Market at the Hy Vee on East 10th Street in Sioux Falls. Vendors are selling their produce from 10 am to 3 pm today and Sunday.  Proceeds will help refugee families from nine countries.
