Samaritan's Feet Teaming up With BDHH And St. Francis House

If you're in a need of a new pair of shoes or you'd like to help serve those less fortunate, you'll want to know about an event on Wednesday at the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House. Samaritan's Feet will be at the homeless shelter handing out footwear to its guests and guests of the St. Francis House.

The first distribution of 2018 for Samaritan's Feet will have a big impact on the homeless population and those working to get back on their feet.

"This is the first time we've served at Bishop Dudley but ironically six years ago this month was our very first shoe distribution in Sioux Falls with some of the same partners, which is really kind of neat," Denise Blomberg with Samaritan's Feet said.

Since then, the organization has given away more than 13,000 pairs of shoes in seven South Dakota communities. Now it's teaming up with the shelter and the St. Francis House to help even more people in need.

A majority of the people receiving footwear Wednesday spend a lot of their time outdoors walking the city.  With our recent weather, you know how important it is to have good shoes.

"Our guests probably walk anywhere from 5-10 miles a day. Then you add on the individuals who are on the streets, which most of the time that's what they're doing the majority of their day.  Having good shoes really is a preventive thing when you look at some of the medical issues that come up with diabetes and high blood pressure. We need people to have good quality shoes on their feet," St. Francis House Executive Director Julie Becker said.

On top of providing 300 pairs of solid footwear to guests, Becker says the event connects different groups to fight a common issue.

"It shows our community that collaboration of nonprofits coming together for a greater cause to share resources to change the lives of other people," Becker said.

There's still a need for volunteers if you're willing to join the effort.

Once the guests at the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House and St. Francis House are given shoes and socks, more will be available to adults on a first-come, first-serve basis. The distribution runs Wednesday from 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at Bishop Dudley. If you'd like to volunteer, click here.
