The past few months at a Cost Cutters in Sioux Falls have been all about healing and coping with the loss of a co-worker and friend.
Monday, the stylists at Cost Cutters are remembering murder victim Amanda Connors and even doing some good.
The events of September 11, 2012 changed many lives when 38-year-old Tyrone Smith walked into Cost Cutters and held several people hostage after killing Connors.
"I remember everything, it was terrifying and sad and a whole bunch of emotions," Cost Cutters Manager Alissa Doom said.
"There are still a lot of paranoia, and seeing it and being in here and seeing the same thing all the time," stylist Jamie Fischer said.
Fischer will always have a reminder of that day. After being grazed by a bullet, it's a memory still fresh in her mind and one she continues to work through on a daily basis.
"I guess for me it was just, 'Oh my gosh, how am I going to get out of here?' And then after a while it set in, shock. Finally it was like, 'I'm going to be fine obviously. I'm still here for a reason,'" Fischer said.
Fischer had only worked at the salon for three weeks when it happened and was still feeling like the "new girl." But as they all continue to work together and work through the shooting, they all agree they are family now more than ever.
"But now after that, you know someone a lot better after going through something like that. Yeah we are very much like a family; we all know many details about each other's lives," Fischer said.
That support and taking time for themselves keeps morale up and the stylists going strong.
"It definitely helps, if you get stuck on the angry and on the sad, it's hard. But you just have to swallow it and just remember her, and her smile and everything and knowing that she is there and you can tell that she helps us all in her own way," Doom said.
As the days pass, the girls are trying to move on. That's something Doom knew was possible.
"We have a strong group of girls and I knew it was possible if we stuck together," Doom said
Monday Cost Cutters is holding a Cut-A-Thon to benefit a scholarship fund established in Amanda Connors' name at the Stewarts School of Hairstyling where she trained as a stylist.
It's scheduled from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Cost Cutters on 41st Street. The cost is a $10 donation which will go to the scholarship fund.
