Russell Street Project Two Weeks Behind

Sioux Falls, SD

Drivers in north Sioux Falls will want to pay close attention.  There are two major construction projects along Russell Street; one is good news, the other is bad news.

This Saturday, the South Dakota of Transportation and the city of Sioux Falls will close the south half of the intersection at Western Avenue and Russell Street.

"Yeah, it will be a little bit of an inconvenience for those folks around that area of the project," Travis Dressen, area engineer with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, said.

Just ask Vick Patel, owner of the Food n Fuel at Kiwanis and Russell.

"It has impacted us quite a bit, I would start with that," Patel said.

The intersection in front of Patel's business has been closed for two months. He knows with progress comes a price.  Patel says he lost about 40 percent of his business.

"I guess it's part of the deal, you know, the locals know they can bypass through the area," Patel said.

The good news for him is the state plans to reopen that intersection this Saturday.  The state says the entire project of widening Russell Street is behind schedule.

"You know the wet weather slowed down construction a little bit; they estimate to be about two weeks behind schedule," Dressen said.

But like always, while it's an inconvenience now, Russell Street will get better.

"The pavement was in really bad condition.  Now it's getting widened to three lanes in each direction.  With that there'll be improved bicycle access, pedestrian facilities and improved drainage along the entire route," Dressen said.

"I'm ok with it, I think that at the pace they are moving at, I was impressed due to the weather, I think they did a great job, a fantastic job," Patel said.

The south half of Western Avenue and Russell Street intersection will be closed for 30 days.
