Republican Bill Janklow Forged Democrat Alliances

Former Gov. Bill Janklow will be remembered not only as a dominant figure in the South Dakota Republican Party, but also as a politician who known to cross party lines to forge friendships and alliances.

So say those who knew the former governor and congressman who died Thursday after a months-long battle with brain cancer.

Janklow's body will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda in Pierre from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday funeral in Sioux Falls. U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle, a Democrat, is set to give Janklow's eulogy at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Daschle says that those who could call Janklow a friend were "really, really blessed."
