A 32-year-old Republican activist is standing trial this week amid allegations of violating campaign laws.
Daniel Willard is facing several misdemeanors for failing to identify the name and address of automated robocalls that were sent out last September before the November election.
The calls criticized Republican leadership for their voting record on cuts to education benefits for veterans that were part of the ten percent cuts made during the 2011 legislative session.
During opening arguments Tuesday morning, prosecutors said they were able to trace the calls to Willard through the credit card that was used to purchase the phone and the email address that was used to register the phone.
Willard’s attorney, former state lawmaker R. Shawn Tornow, argued that the case is based on ‘assumptions and speculation’ and he called the case against Willard a ‘political witch hunt.’
