Remembering Kayla Paetow

Hurley, SD

"It didn't seem real. It didn't seem real until we saw her for the first time today," sister Heather Boterman said.

She might have only been on Earth for 20 years, but family members of Kayla Paetow say she made the most of her time. Her sister-in-law, Nicole Paetow remembers how she cared for her children, even at a young age.

"You're almost hitting junior high and you want to take care of and be your little niece and nephew. It speaks miles about the big heart she had," Nicole Paetow said.

These sisters has traveled from all across the country to be together during this difficult time.

"I think it's comforting you have each other to talk to and to share going through this tragic experience," Heidi Escobedo said.

"We just talked about our memories of Kayla and laughed and had fun looking at old pictures last night," Boterman said.

Despite all the heartbreak for friends and family, there is some positives from this tragic event.

These three women also remember their time with their good friend.

"We were inseparable. If I wasn't staying at her house she was staying at mine," Bailey Bennett said.

When they first heard about the news of their friends death, they wanted to do something to help the family. So they have each done something to help raise money to help pay for the funeral.

"Obviously they weren't expecting their 20 year-old daughter to die and in such a horrific way so I thought this could really help them out," Skyler-White Olson said.

A GoFundMe.com page was created, and people can also buy shirts and bracelets. The girls hope that these things can help people remember their friend taken away too soon.

"It just means a lot by them buying them and helping pay for stuff and people remembering her, gone but never forgotten," Mara Bossman said.

Paetow's funeral is scheduled for tomorrow at the Turner County First Presbyterian Church.
