Recovery Art Show Brings Community Together

Sioux Falls, SD

Addiction and recovery are taking center stage tonight at the 5th Annual Recovery Art Show. The event is organized by Tallgrass Recovery and it's meant to get people talking about their struggles.

"It's basically the painful beauty that comes with recovery itself," Betsy Ashworth said.

Ashworth is a regular at the Recovery Art Show organized by Tallgrass. After struggling for years in a relationship with someone addicted to alcohol, Ashworth took the big step and walked away.

"I just felt broken and depressed at that time. As you can see on the other side, it's tearing there. It's colorful tears and much happier just because I'm in such a more beautiful, better place now that I've decided to step away from that environment," Ashworth said.

All of the art on display at Exposure Gallery helps Tallgrass inspire people to open up about alcohol and drug addiction.

Hannah Wendt has gone through some dark times in her life. This is Wendt's first time participating in the recovery show. She's bringing two pieces.

"To kind of further my own recovery and my own healing but I have written poetry with each piece. Hopefully someone can see it and it helps them too," Wendt said.

And that's exactly the point. The artists will be on hand to discuss the hours that went into the emotionally-charged works. They'll also offer encouragement to those in recovery or on their way.

"It's never easy and it's never going to be easy but as long as you keep going," Wendt said.

"It's tough to see that, I guess, at the beginning when you're first walking away because you're in a dark, dark place. It's wonderful once you step into the life of recovery, whether you're the addict or a family member like I am," Ashworth said.

And sharing your story can help you grow stronger.

The Recovery Art Show takes place Friday night from 5 to 9 p.m. at Exposure Gallery & Studios on North Phillips Ave in downtown. The event is free and open to the public.
