Sioux Falls, SD
A Sioux Falls realtor is all about finding good homes for pets, as well as people.
The Sioux Falls housing market is heating up heading into summer.
"There's still tons of buyers out there that want to get that perfect home," realtor Katie Day said.
But Day doesn't just find that perfect home for families.
"I like all animals. I would say my heart's probably with the dogs," Day said.
Day is willing to go the extra mile to deliver unwanted pets to rescue groups, many of them in the Twin Cities, who in turn, place the animals with foster families.
"February of this year, I did three trips; three weekends in a row to Minneapolis and back. So it all depends on how many dogs we have at the time that need to get to a rescue," Day said.
Day finds out about many pets in need of rescue through social media. She never gets lonely on the road with a car full of four-legged traveling companions. Once she took a trip with 15 dogs in tow.
"It can sometimes be a little crazy, especially if you have puppies who will cry," Day said.
Day's road trips take place on weekends, which is prime time for realtors hosting open houses. But many times, Day is able to drop off the pets and still show a house.
"I have got up very early in the morning and drove to Mankato, Sioux City, those types of things and got right back to Sioux Falls and started in the afternoon back to work, so it just matters how far a trip I'm taking," Day said.
Day will often pay for the dogs' medical care and boarding fees. Day's love for animals is the driving force behind her desire to deliver pets to loving homes.
"The job's never going to be done. It's something I know we're going to do for the rest of our lives," Day said.
The Cenex Corporation awarded Day with $50 of free gas as part of its Tanks of Thanks program in recognition of her volunteer work.
