Rapid City Writes Off $125K In Parking Tickets

Parking violators in Rapid City will be getting a break as the city has moved to write off about $125,000 in unpaid tickets.

The amount comes from nearly 12,000 parking citations that were issued between 2008 and 2010.

The city's Finance Office has deemed the violations uncollectable, which are mostly $5 or $10 tickets.

Finance Officer Pauline Sumption says the city should have been clearing its books of unpaid tickets every year, but the last time the citations were purged from the balance sheet was 2012. Sumption says about 9,800 tickets worth nearly $118,000 were written off at that time.

The newspaper reports that 3,484 tickets remained unpaid from 2008, 3,992 from 2009 and 4,470 from 2010.
