Rock Valley, IA
Today was the kick-off of RAGBRAI, the big cross-state bike tour across Iowa. While it was a fun time for all the bikers, it was a long road for the host town of Rock Valley to prepare for the thousands of bikers after a devastating flood last month.
An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 bikers took off from Rock Valley to take part in the 69 mile trek to Okoboji today.
Rock Valley was the first town on this year's route in January. Even after last month's home destroyed many homes in the town, officials still vowed to host RAGBRAI. The City's mayor says it took a lot of hard work from volunteers across the state, but he's pleased with the final product.
“It took a lot of hours and a lot of sacrifice by a lot of people putting in a lot of time and energy and making this all come. We had a lot of help from the RAGBRAI people, so what a great day to watch these guys ride out,” Mayor Kevin Van Otterloo said.
The total RAGBRAI route is 418 miles.
The biking community didn't just help get the town ready for the event, but it also collected funds to help the people of the flood-damaged area.
We will hear how RAGBRAI helped raise money for Rock Valley coming up tonight on KELOLAND Weekend News at 10.
