Prosecutor Mulls Death Penalty In SD Stabbing

rapid city, sd

A prosecutor says he may seek the death penalty against a man accused of stabbing a pregnant woman to death in a Rapid City parking lot.

Michael Young is charged with first-degree murder and fetal homicide.

He's accused of killing 30-year-old Morgan Myers and her unborn child in a Rapid City Walmart parking lot last April. Young is recovering from self-inflicted stab wounds.

Pennington County prosecutor Glenn Brenner says he's "leaning toward" seeking the death penalty against Young.

Brenner says he hasn't gone for the death penalty in 16 years in office. But he says the Young case "fits, legally and morally" for the death penalty.

Brenner is up for re-election, and his opponent, Mark Vargo, says Brenner's death-penalty talk is a political ploy. Brenner denies that.
