Progress Made In Western SD Wildfires

rosebud, sd

Authorities say firefighters in western South Dakota have made some progress with wildfires in the region.

The Myrtle fire, about a mile east of Pringle in the Black Hills, had grown from 7,000 acres Friday to more than 9,000 acres Saturday, or about 14 square miles.

Fire spokesman Chris Barth says the blaze was about 20 percent contained Sunday. Barth says overnight rain of more than an inch in some areas of the Black Hills helped firefighters with their efforts.

Nearby, the Longhorn Complex on the Rosebud reservation began as four separate fires caused by lightning Thursday night. It merged into two fires Saturday, covering about eight square miles. The fires were about 21 percent contained Saturday night.
