Dairy Queen customers filled up on Blizzards while helping sick kids Thursday. Miracle Treat Day is a fundraiser for Children's Miracle Network. Typically, the busiest DQ in the country is right here in South Dakota.
The Blizzard blitz is a late-summer snacking tradition in Madison.
"We're fortunate to have a great brand in a small community is our secret to it, honestly, Dairy Queen owner DeLon Mork Said.
This Dairy Queen's goal is selling 40,000 Blizzards with proceeds going to Children's Miracle Network. Customers ranged from U.S. Senator John Thune to Madison mom, Amber Schmidt.
"We eat here all the time. Good food, good ice cream," Schmidt said.
Schmidt has a personal reason for supporting CMN. Her 22 month-old son Nolan was seven weeks premature and born with a separation in his small intestine.
"He was in the hospital for 98 days. He had three surgeries in the hospital and two outside surgeries from that," Schmidt said.
For Schmidt, Miracle Treat Day is about more than just enjoying a Blizzard.
"I've always loved Miracle Treat Day even before we had our son. I loved helping out DeLon and our community is just amazing. But then after having Nolan, you truly find out what they really help out with, from housing families to feeding families," Schmidt said.
The success of Miracle Treat Day isn't only due to the hard-working staff at Dairy Queen. This is truly a community-wide effort.
"And it's not just our community, it's several communities, all the communities around pull together to make this thing happen, it's an overwhelming feeling to me," Mork said.
Many of the servers are volunteers. With so much community support, this Dairy Queen is well-positioned to keep its eight-year ice cream hot streak going into a ninth year.
While the Madison Dairy Queen's official goal is 40,000 Blizzards, they'd like to sell 42,006. That would put them at a total of 200,000 Blizzards for the nine years of Miracle Treat Day.
