Positively KELOLAND: A Home For Austin

Tea, SD

They're called Austin's Angels and they've come together in a big way to help a little boy.

The town of Tea and surrounding communities are rallying around Austin Schoppert-Coffee, who was born a healthy little boy, however, complications from meningitis caused doctors to remove all four of his limbs in order to save his life.

In this week's Positively KELOLAND, we get to see the culmination of hundreds of volunteers and business leaders who've helped build Austin a new home.

There's no place like home, especially this one.

It was built by a group of volunteers who call themselves 'Austin's Angels'.

"I don't know if we ever knew it was going to happen, but today it's just amazing, Austin is going to have his home this year," organizer Tracy Schmidt said.

For the past two years, contractors, businesses, volunteers and others have donated everything from money to materials to make this dream come true.

Even house movers from Milbank volunteered their time and equipment to move this four bedroom home from Lennox High School, where it was built, to Tea where it's now being placed on a newly built foundation.

Herm Otten of Otten Construction is the lead contractor on the project. Plus he and his wife donated the land for the house.

"This never would have happened without the kind heart of the people willing to donate and part with their hard earned money and businesses donating their materials and labor to make this all happen," Otten said.

The new home means Austin will have more independence, because every room is designed especially for him.

"He'll be able to drive his chair around, he will be able to get in and out of the doors himself, have a lot more room and be more comfortable," Austin's mother Heather Coffee said.

Comfortable in a community that pulled together to help a young child in need.

"To see it sitting on the road, this is reality, this is happening, the community came together ad made this house for this little boy is amazing," Schmidt said.

As Austin and his mother watch crews move their new home into place, they can only say one thing.

"For everybody who has taken part in this project, we appreciate it, we thank you very much and couldn't have done it without you," Coffee said.

Crews still have some inside work to finish, plus they are building a garage too. Austin and his family are hoping to move into their new home this fall.
