Porta-Potty Placement During Rally Is Tough Choice

Sturgis, SD

The placement of porta-potties during the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally is no easy decision for city officials.

About 150 portable toilets are set up every year and choosing where to place them is a balancing act.

A common concern for city officials is that too many lumped together could impede access of emergency vehicles, but those attending the event typically want the portable toilets near their activities.

Public works director Rick Bush is responsible for making a fair placement decision. He says local businesses benefit from the thousands of rallygoers but don't want the porta-potties near their businesses.

Bush says the decision must be carefully analyzed because the toilets are difficult to slide around once they're set and the chemical is in them.
