Police: Victim's Kids In Apartment At Time Of Stabbing

Sioux Falls, SD

A Sioux Falls man is in custody, accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death while her young children were in their apartment.

28-year-old Michael Martinez faces murder and manslaughter charges.

Police were called at 2:30 a.m. Thursday to the couple's apartment on South Rock Creek Drive, which is near 26th Street and Cleveland Avenue.
Martinez is accused of stabbing 21-year-old Beverly Guerra multiple times with a kitchen knife.

Guerra's two children were in a back room at the time.  The three and six year olds are now in protective custody.

Police say this all started with a fight between the two.

"It's something we work with a lot of agencies in and around the Sioux Falls and the state to bring attention to domestic violence.  Because sadly there are times when it ends in the death of someone in that relationship," Sioux Falls Police Lt. Matt Burns said.

An autopsy is taking place.

Authorities say this is the third homicide in Sioux Falls this year.
