Police: Man Stole Tractor, Led Officers In Pursuit

A man in northwest Iowa is accused of stealing a tractor and trying to ram police vehicles during a low-speed pursuit.

At about 1:35 a.m. Saturday, police checked on a suspicious tractor running in a church parking lot on East 18th Street in Spencer. When officers approached the vehicle, the driver refused to stop and drove away from police.

During a low-speed pursuit through eastside neighborhoods, the driver swerved at law enforcement while they tried to use stop sticks. The driver drove onto a lawn in the 300 block of East 10th Street and struck a police vehicle before officers grabbed him out of the tractor and arrested him.

Officers found that the tractor had been stolen from a Spencer home. Jeremy Starkson, 38, of Spencer, is charged with theft, eluding, reckless driving, driving while barred, assault on law enforcement, and operation without owner's consent.

Starkson is currently in custody at Clay County Jail. Police were assisted by the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
