People Line Up For Janklow Memorial

pierre, sd

People began lining up before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to pay their last respects to former Governor Bill Janklow during a public memorial service.

State capitol crews spent Tuesday morning clearing snow from the capitol's steps to prepare for the hundreds expected to show up.

The memorial service is expected to last around 45 minutes. Afterward, the Honor Guard will carry the casket out the front doors to drive along Interstate 90 passing through several South Dakota towns on the way to Sioux Falls.

As the processional passes through the capital, tributes will include bagpipes, an F-16 jet flyover, a 21 gun salute and the song Taps.

After the funeral service Wednesday, Governor Dennis Daugaard has requested all flags be flown at half staff until Friday to honor the late governor.

The 2012 South Dakota State Legislative Session will not resume until Thursday.
