500 people are gathered on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to honor the life of Russell Means.
The activist's remains arrived in Kyle at 12:30 p.m., accompanied by the Lakota Riders on horseback. The gathering in the high school gymnasium will last until 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Means died on Monday after a battle with cancer. He is best known in South Dakota for helping lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee. More recently, he also appeared in Hollywood films.
His ashes will be scattered in the Black Hills of South Dakota on Thursday.
