Patchwork Of SD Driver's Ed Programs Under Review

The South Dakota Public Safety Department has begun reviewing the state's assortment of driver's education programs, and one instructor says she would be open to more teaching guidance.

There is little state oversight for driver's education programs and the only requirement pertains to teacher training.

Legislators and state officials have shared a growing interest in safe driving for the past few years. A new texting while driving ban takes effect July 1.

The safety department has hired a consultant to review the training, curriculum and statistics of teen driver crashes and traffic violations.

Driver's education instructor Kathy Askew would accept the opportunity for more training and more guidelines. Askew teaches in Pierre, where young drivers take 30 hours of courses through Capitol University Center.
