Sioux Falls, SD
The number of criminal cases in Minnehaha County has skyrocketed by nearly 80 percent in the last decade. With so many more cases, the Sheriff's Office is turning to technology to show the public who's behind bars.
The website went live this week. Sheriff Mike Milstead says the county already had the infrastructure in place, but now the public has access to the information.
Just go to the sheriff's office website and click on this link called "Who's Behind Bars?" and you can see information about the people in custody.
"It has their name, the date that they were placed in jail, time of the intake, the facility they're in, the charges their in on and the bond amount," Milstead said.
Before this tool, Milstead says you would have had to call the jail and specifically ask about an inmate by name. This new site makes that information more user-friendly.
"I think it provides better access to the public of whose in jail in particular family members and victims. Sometimes a victim wants to know if a particular individual is still in custody, and this makes it much easier for him to check because it updates every 15 minutes," Milstead said.
The Sheriff says it's important to remember that just because you see a name on the website, it doesn't mean that person is guilty of a crime.
"You need to remember that most people in the county jail have not had quote, 'Their day in court,' yet," Milstead said.
Milstead says that Pennington County also has a searchable database on inmates.
