New SF Capital Plan Set For Nearly $500 Million In Projects

Road construction projects, park renovations and even new street light technology is all part of the yearly capital project proposal organized by Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether. This year's proposal is no different with the total spending amount over the next five years reaching $491.8 million.

"As our economy grows and the dollars keep growing and the sales tax numbers keep coming in, it won't be long. In fact, I was just trying to figure out how long it would be until we get to that half a billion dollars," council member Greg Jamison said.

The increasing price tag is not a shock to returning city council members, or the new additions to the group.

"It is a big city and it does take a lot of money to run this city and we want to be sure we are meeting the needs of the citizens," council member Rick Kiley said.

Nearly $200 million of the capital proposal will be assigned to new and continuing road construction projects in the city.

"I think it reflects what the citizens of Sioux Falls want. It addresses our infrastructure and our city streets," Kiley said.

It was the top priority in Mayor Huether's plan for the next five years, and also that of Kiley as he starts his term on the council.

"When I ran for this office here in recent months, I was campaigning on issues like city streets and public transportation," Kiley said.

With nearly $300 million spent in utility improvement projects, city park renovations and public safety, Kiley, Jamison and the rest of the council will take their time in making sure each capital project has the proper funding.

"So now, we have to start shuffling things and making sure the money is in the right place. So, the next few months will be busy for us," Jamison said.

Over the next two months, Mayor Huether and city council members will look at all the numbers in much more detail, make adjustments and present a final plan for an official vote in September.
