New Madison Water Tank Replaces One That Collapsed

Madison, SD

Six months after Madison's 6,500 residents had to limit water usage for two days when a storage tank collapsed; a new above-ground tank is online.

Crews have been dumping soil in the massive hole left by the million-gallon underground tank after its concrete-and-dirt roof collapsed Jan. 15 and contaminated the water.

A new tank and an adjoining pump station were already planned as part of a $3.5 million upgrade to the city's water system.

Madison's engineer says the city is seeking state funding so it can connect to the nearby Big Sioux River Community Water System Inc.

That pipeline would eventually connect Madison with the Lewis & Clark Rural Water System that will deliver Missouri River water to 20 towns and rural water systems in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.
