New Conceal Carry Permit Cards In South Dakota

Sioux Falls

If you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon in South Dakota, there is something you should know. South Dakota's concealed carry permits are getting a new look.

"We are debuting the new-looking card, from the somewhat old library-looking card to the new, like your drivers license card that has the reflective hologram on it," said Secretary of State Shantel Krebs.

With more than 96,000 active permit holders in South Dakota, the state is hoping a new design will increase the efficiency of producing new concealed carry permits and lower their cost.

"We're excited to tell you that we've hit all-time record highs of issuing the new and renewed permits out of our office with over 30,000 being issued in this past year," said Krebs.

The newly-announced re-design means the cost of each permit will be cut from $4.75 to $1.48. The old permit card cost more primarily because it had to be made by hand. The new card will look similar to a South Dakota driver's license and will be made with a new reflective material.

Krebs said the changes are needed because record numbers of concealed carry permits caused her to start looking into a better way to handle the growing number of applications.

"Almost 1 in 6 South Dakotans have a concealed carry permit in the state," said Krebs.

Last year, more than 30,000 residents were issued a new or renewed permit. That number increased from about 22,000 permits in 2015. Back in 2006, only about 12,000 permits were held in the state. That's an increase of 155% in the last decade.

If you're applying for a new concealed carry gun permit, or renewing an expired permit, you can do that at your local sheriff's office.

For those just wanting to upgrade to the new permit, you can write a request to the South Dakota Secretary Of State's Office with your personal information and a $2 check. In the letter be sure to include your name, date of birth, address, signature and permit number.
