New Charges Filed Against Former Teacher In NW Iowa

Sioux Center, IA

A former Iowa teacher accused of sexual assault involving students faces additional charges.

Sioux Center Police arrested Curtis Van Dam in October; he lost his job as a 5th grade teacher the next day.

While he was first charged with just two counts, the total is now up to 140 including 14 counts of sexual exploitation by a teacher and 72 counts of second-degree sexual abuse.

The allegations started to come out when someone with the school filed a complaint on October 18. That alerted the police department that there was possibly inappropriate conduct between one of the teachers and a student.

As police looked into the case, they found allegations that go back to August 2013 and took place at various locations, including the Sioux Center Christian School.  We asked about the ages of the alleged victims.  Chief Paul Adkins would only say that they are all under the age of 14.

According to the Sioux Center Police, Van Dam has been arrested again and taken to the Sioux County Jail.
