Motorcycle Mission Goes Global

mitchell, sd

Two years ago, a Mitchell woman wanted to do something to give back to her community. So she started a program that would help at risk girls at the Abbott House. Little did she know at the time, her idea would wind up helping hundreds of girls around the world, one wrench at a time.

The girls at the Abbott House have restored and customized two Harley Davidson motorcycles over the past couple of years.  The most recent one will be raffled off next week to help raise money for the Abbott House.

The restoration project is through a program called Helping with Horsepower, an idea that was kick started by Laura Klock of Klock Werks.

"She had a need and desire to help here in Mitchell and our community.  One of the ways she could do that is with her love and passion for motorcycles," Dave Siestma of Klock Werks said.

Now Klock's passion has turned into a worldwide motorcycle mission helping hundreds of girls, some who were sexually and physically abused and removed from their homes.

"It's gone nationwide.  We've got 10 programs currently, we are visiting with and there's a chance for us to go international.  We've sent the curriculum to Australia," Siestma said.

Siestma says the Helping with Horsepower program shows the girls that anything can be fixed, including young lives.

"It doesn't always have to champion, the biggest name in town.  Some times it's the smallest stuff that started as an idea, got a little support from somebody else and from there it grows into something you never imagined could take hold at a global level," Siestma said.

Laura Klock and Helping with Horsepower were featured in Oprah's magazine.  If you'd like a chance at winning the latest restored customized Harley, there are still tickets available.  The winner will be drawn March 12.  Learn more about Helping With Horsepower online.
