Mother Continues Message 15 Years After Son's Death

Sioux Falls, SD

It's something many have heard before but the message to not drink and drive is something that one mother has been repeating for 15 years.

In January of 1998 Nancy Scharenbroich decided to follow an ambulance near her hometown of Brandon on a whim.

"I decided to follow it because it was probably just going to go to the old folks home at the end of the road, take a left, no big deal," Scharenbroich said.

Instead the ambulance led her to the scene of a deadly crash just outside of Brandon involving her son, 16-year-old Eric Scharenbroich, and his girlfriend, Angee Rozeboom. The high school juniors were killed after a collision with a drunk driver.

"I feel I was brought there for a reason. Ever since that moment I've been compelled to change people's lives," Scharenbroich said.

She's done that by creating the stickers and key chains with a message that says Get A Ride, Don’t Drink and Drive.

She's done that by speaking to teens in schools about drinking and driving for a decade.

She's done it by starting a nonprofit organization called H.E.A.R.T., which stands for Help Eliminate Alcohol Related Tragedies.

"I'm just trying to make it so it doesn't happen to anyone else. I know I can't stop it but I can sure do my part to try to help," Scharenbroich said.

Now, her message will be on the airwaves with the help of a grant for $25,000 in advertising time on KELO-TV as part of the Avera Tradition of Caring in KELOLAND.

"It was amazing when I found out I got the grant because it's just another avenue to get the message out there," Scharenbroich said.

A message of young lives cut short because of drunk driving.

Scharenbroich also has a video playing at all of the driver's exam stations in South Dakota to remind people not to drink and drive.
