More Than 160 Riders Participate In Bike Race

rapid city, sd

Officials say more than 160 people competed in the first Black Hills Back 40 mountain bike race in South Dakota.

Duane Martenson, of Rapid City, was the first rider to cross the finish line in Saturday's race, in a time of 4 hours, 8 minutes and 38 seconds.

Officials say the mostly singe-track course features a 5,000-foot climb in elevation and includes many technical spots.

Racer Paul Schoening of Minneapolis says he fought through two rounds of cramps on a hot and muggy day to reach the finish line.

Schoening says his time of 4 hours, 48 minutes and 41 seconds was not as good as he had hoped, but he plans to return next year.
