MN Man Ticketed For Shooting Cougar

Round Lake, MN

Prosecutors have charged a southwest Minnesota man for shooting a cougar last fall.

26-year-old Daniel Hamann has been ticketed for shooting a protected animal, which is a misdemeanor. Hamann shot the 125-pound cougar in late November after a neighbor spotted the big cat running across the road and into a culvert near Round Lake, MN.  The two men said they flushed out the cougar from the culvert and then Hamann shot it.

Hamann told KELOLAND News in December that because the cougar was so close to the road, he killed it to protect children and livestock in the area. Hamann said he would have left the cougar alone if it had been in the middle of a field.

The Department of Natural Resources says it may be the first time in modern history that a citizen has shot a cougar in Minnesota.
