Mickelson Planning Helping With Janklow Events

PIERRE, SD

Plans that were quickly put together when then-South Dakota Gov. George Mickelson was killed in a plane crash in 1993 are helping officials plan events following the death last week of former Gov. Bill Janklow.

Janelle Toman was Mickelson's press secretary. She and others involved in planning after Mickelson's death met last week with people planning Tuesday's events, which include Janklow's body lying in state in the Capitol building, and an afternoon memorial service.

Toman says planning for such events comes down to details such as seating, movement of guests and handling flowers.

Toman says the state's planning for the Mickelson events also were borrowed by Missouri when then-Gov. Mel Carnahan died in a place crash in 2000.
