McVay Has Attempted Suicide Before

Sioux Falls, SD

South Dakota death row inmate James McVay committed suicide in the maximum-security Jameson Annex overnight but this is not the first time he has tried to take his own life.

After being transported back to South Dakota from Madison, Wisconsin, following the 2011 murder of 75-year-old Maybelle Schein a South Dakota Department of Corrections psychiatrist said McVay tried to overdose.

April Story: Psychiatrist: McVay Tried To Overdose In Prison

Dr. Christopher Davidson, a psychiatrist who works at the penitentiary, talked about the suicide attempt in April during McVay’s death penalty hearing. Davidson testified that McVay's thinking began to shift in September 2011 following Schein’s murder. Davidson said that McVay thought that he had to die for his crime so he tried to overdose on the antipsychotic drug Seroquel. Davidson said McVay likely ‘cheeked’ the medication, which means he faked out the nurses by pretending to take it and then stockpiled the prescription in his cell.

The South Dakota Department of Corrections says McVay was found ‘hanging in his cell’ Thursday.
