Wessington Springs, SD
It's been a difficult last few days for residents in Wessington Springs after a tornado ripped through the town. The city's mayor, Melissa Mebius had to balance the safety of her family alongside the safety of the community.
Mebius and her family, including her three children, all stayed in the basement of their home as the tornado passed through town. Once the storm passed, she brought her kids to her in-laws, who live on the side of town that wasn't damaged from the twister. She then focused her attention to making sure the city was safe. Since the disaster, the mayor has been spending the majority of her time at the Command Center, but she still takes time to check on her children.
“My husband, he came right here. I had family all over that came back really quick. My house is already emptied out. So they went through all those things for me, so I could help take care of the city and they were helping take care of my kids,” Mebius said.
Mebius says her home has shifted badly on its foundation, and she doesn't believe she will be able to save it.
We will have more from the Mayor coming up tonight on KELOLAND Weekend News at 10.
