One in eight women will battle breast cancer in their lifetime. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month where supporters across the country hope to raise awareness through early detection, education and research. One gym in Sioux Falls hopes to make a difference one kick at a time.
Circuit training like this is a part of Mallary Van Tol's weekly schedule, yet today her workout means more. She's kicking for a cause.
"It's important to me personally because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014," Van Tol said.
That's why Van Tol is stepping up to raise money for those still fighting.
"She's a survivor and to celebrate her survivorship as well as continue to raise funding for breast cancer research and to help other women in the future," Van Tol said.
Throughout the day, 9Round Fitness locations across the country are kicking out cancer. Each kick during any of the nine rounds of circuit training donates a penny to breast cancer research.
Last year, the gym raised $3,000 for breast cancer research. This year, it hopes to raise $5,000. All funds stay local.
"The two foundations that we're donating money to are the Edith Sanford Foundation and the Avera Breast Center here in town," lead trainer Amos Buelow said.
Buelow says he hopes the fundraiser will make a difference this October.
"If something is going to happen positively toward breast cancer research, it's going to be in Sioux Falls so we want to help support that," said Buelow.
Today, Van Tol hopes she can show her strength, like her mom did and many others are.
"It was awesome to see how much fight she had. Her spirit of never giving up was so evident through all of it. She's my hero," said Van Tol.
