Sioux Falls
Human Trafficking is the fastest-growing organized crime in the world. Advocates in KELOLAND want National Human Trafficking Awareness Month to be a reminder of the work that needs to be done to combat the issue.
Call To Freedom Executive Director Becky Rasmussen says we can no longer ignore the signs of trafficking.
Abnormal behavior, lack of control and avoiding eye contact are all red flags that should be reported.
"It's our job as a community to report it, and it's law enforcement's job to follow up to see if it is something that needs to have a further action. And so reporting that to the National Human Trafficking Hotline is important. If it's an emergency situation, call 911," Rasmussen said.
If you want to report anonymously, call
CrimeStoppers.
"2018 is definitely going to be a year that we need to focus on uniting our community in regards to our task force. We are strengthening the East River Human Trafficking Task Force which is comprised of different organizations from FBI, DCI, Assistant US Attorneys, to anti human trafficking groups," Rasmussen said.
Call To Freedom is also adding two new case managers this year to help connect victims with resources that they need.
On Saturday in Sioux Falls, there will be a self-defense class against human trafficking held at Church at the Gate, 6820 W. 26th Street. For more information, visit the
Call To Freedom's website.
