Little SD-Owned Publishing House Earns Wilder Book

Pierre, SD

South Dakota's state-owned printing press has produced award-winning books for years, and the little publishing house could be thrust into the national spotlight as it releases the unpublished memoir of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The South Dakota State Historical Society Press plans to publish "Pioneer Girl: An Annotated Autobiography" this November. Wilder wrote the rough draft more than 80 years ago and used it as the foundation for her famous "Little House" series.

Press director Nancy Koupal says others have tried to publish the memoir in the past but were unsuccessful. She says the keepers of Wilder's literary estate wanted it to be published by a scholarly press.

Koupal says the press has won 50 awards and is more than capable to publish the book.
