Lighting The Skies

Sioux Falls, SD

The fourth of July holiday is finally here, and it's no secret that fireworks seem to go hand in hand with this time of year. For Willie Williamson, there are many things he enjoys about fireworks.

"Family. Family and the boom. And the barbecue, and you  know, everything like that," Willie Williamson said.

Each year, Williamson and his wife travel to South Dakota all the way from Seattle to enjoy the festivities and spend time with family. This same story applies to many firework enthusiasts, including Chris Kahny.

"We got people from all over the United States, and we do this once a year," Kahny said "So it's a good chance to meet with the cousins, the aunts, the uncles, the grandpas and grandmas and have a good time."

With each individual firework display, comes various family traditions.

"My husband usually puts together a little playlist of songs to kind of go along with it, and we have a good time," Sheri Papke said.

A good time that can really add up. Papke says her family typically spends a couple hundred dollars on fireworks each year, which seems to be the case for many firework shoppers.

"Probably 150 to 200 dollars so," Kahny said. "We go out once and try and spend 50, but then we make three or four more trips it seems like every year."

Sioux Falls bans fireworks that have an audible report or projectile or launching components.
