Libraries' Embrace Of E-Books Is Growing

Sioux Falls, SD

South Dakota libraries are adapting to the increasing use of tablets and e-readers by helping people learn how to use the devices.

A taxpayer-funded library card now gives readers free access to thousands of books, magazines and other resources.

State librarian Daria Bossman says the transition is especially affecting rural libraries.

Of the 111 public libraries in the state, 74 give readers access to eBooks through OverDrive Inc.

Siouxland Libraries in the Sioux Falls area is one that also subscribes to Zinio, which gives users free access to magazines.

Custer County Library director Doris Ann Mertz says a lot of retirees like e-readers because they can increase the font size. Mertz says a lot of people get them as Christmas gifts and grumble at first but eventually see the benefit.
