Late Gov. Bill Janklow's Wake Draws A Crowd

sioux falls, sd

Gov. Bill Janklow's granddaughter says his months-long battle with cancer had an unexpected upside: "These last few months have been a blessing that we all had the opportunity to tell him goodbye."

Lindsey Janklow is one about 700 people crowded into Our Savior's Lutheran Church for Janklow's Tuesday wake. The 72-year-old former governor and congressman died Thursday.

The evening visitation switched gears from somber to celebratory as local band Arlie's All Stars broke into a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" in between speakers. Next came Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman."

Janklow's son, Russ, has said his dad loved classic rock and wanted it included in his wake.

Janklow served four terms as governor but resigned as South Dakota's lone congressman after causing a fatal traffic accident.
