Sometimes getting the word out is half the battle. And thanks to a recent Eye on KELOLAND, the Ronald McDonald house is getting some help it's been desperately hoping for.
Whether your house sleeps two or 20, you know there are hidden costs to maintain it. No one knows that more than the Ronald McDonald house.
“Every single penny counts. Every penny adds up. Every penny gets us through the year to help our families,” MJ Schmidt with the Ronald McDonald House said.
It's something they've learned through the years, and over the summer it became even more apparent as donations lagged, but the need held strong. But the word has gotten out, and Schmidt says people are stepping up.
“We depend on donations to support our mission. So when we get a call like this to support our mission we're just ecstatic and our families are just so grateful,” Schmidt said.
One of those people is John Schutte and his entire team of realtors at Keller-Williams. They heard the story and they want to help too.
“The Ronald McDonald house fits really well within our mission because it involves housing people. And that's what we do everyday,” Schutte said.
Usually getting people housing makes the team money, this time they hope to make some for the Ronald McDonald house, donating $100 for each new listing in September. The goal by the end of the month is $5,000.
“Hopefully we can do better than that. And if we don't quite reach our goal we're going to do as well as we can,” Schutte said.
And for a place where families depend on anything just to keep hope alive, even the effort is a good start.
“No one ever asks the child if they're strong enough or old enough to fight for their lives but they do it every day at the Ronald McDonald house,” Schmidt said.
The Ronald McDonald House continues to operate at 100 percent capacity. Most nights there is a waiting list for families wanting to use the facility.
