Judge Sets Patterson's Bond At $1 Million Cash Only

Sioux Falls, SD

Joseph Patterson appeared before a Minnehaha County judge after being arrested for first-degree kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, and strangulation early Wednesday morning.

During his brief court appearance Wednesday afternoon, Judge Joni Culter set Patterson’s bond at $1 million cash.

Patterson was arrested last fall on charges that he killed the biological son of Minnesota Vikings player Adrian Peterson. Two-year-old Tyrese Ruffin died from injuries he received from allegedly being abused by Patterson in October 2013.

Patterson’s previous bond of $750,000 was paid by his father in October. Lincoln County State's Attorney Tom Wollman confirms he has filed a motion to revoke and forfeit that previously paid bond because of the new charges.

In court Wednesday, Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan said the new charges stem from an early morning incident where Patterson strangled a Sioux Falls woman and knocked her unconcious. Patterson held the woman captive for more than an hour. McGowan said in court the woman has injuries on her neck from the incident. McGowan added that Patterson also tried to contact the victim via phone an hour before his court appearance Wednesday.

If convicted of kidnapping, Patterson could spend the rest of his life in prison.
