The former Walworth County State's Attorney is being held without bond in Pierre on three counts of child rape.
Christopher Jansen, 34 of Selby, was arrested this week for the alleged crimes. Jansen was the states attorney in Walworth County from 2009 to 2012 and had recently been doing court-appointed criminal defense work.
Inside the Hughes County Courthouse Thursday Jansen made his first court appearance over a video conference system. The hearing lasted just a few minutes for charges that could send Jansen to prison for the rest of his life. Court documents indicate that the three victims in the case are under the age of 13 years old.

Jansen's attorney, Joan Powell, did not object to a request from prosecutors to hold Jansen in the Hughes County Jail on the charges without bond.
Prosecutors said in court that Jansen is 'not only a danger to the community but also himself.'
Court documents say Jansen committed the alleged crimes in Blunt, South Dakota, which is about 70 miles away from his home in Selby. However, there was no information released in court Thursday as to Jansen's connection to the town of Blunt.
READ Jansen's Charges
Outside of the charges no other details are being released about the crimes Jansen is accused of committing because a majority of the documents in the case have been sealed.
The first-degree rape charges have a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Jansen's next court appearance is August 26.
