Inmates Helping With Flood Clean Up In South Dakota

100 minimum-security inmates from Sioux Falls and Yankton will be assisting in Union County’s flood clean up Tuesday afternoon.

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard authorized 50 inmates from Unit C in Sioux Falls and 50 from the Yankton Minimum Unit to assist communities following Monday’s storm.

Inmates have been assisting in emergency responses since 1996. They are screened for type of crime, and medical or physical limitations that would put the community at risk, according to the South Dakota Department of Corrections.
