Imported Sheep Doing Well In SD, State To Add More

Deadwood, SD

South Dakota's Game, Fish and Parks Department will use $80,000 from an auctioned big horn sheep hunting license toward establishing a new herd of the big game animal near Deadwood.

The state issues three licenses annually: two by lottery, one by auction. This is the second year for the auction, which supports the state's sheep program.

This year's winner is Jeff Demaske from Colorado.

The department gave an update Wednesday to lawmakers in the Government Operations and Audit Committee.

The state and Oglala Sioux Tribe worked together to import animals from Montana this January. All the adult ewes of the 20 added to the Elk Mountain herd have produced lambs since their release.

The process cost about $12,000. Funding came from a hunting license auctioned off last year for $102,000.
