I-29 Closed, Flash Flooding South Of SF

Lennox, SD

State officials closed Interstate 29, south of Sioux Falls, because of water over the road.  Northbound traffic is being diverted from Interstate 29 at Exit 47 onto S.D. Highway 46 at Beresford. Southbound lanes of I-29 are closed at Exit 73 near Tea due to water over the road further south.

Before the closure, many drivers tried to make it through, including Amanda Trenerry.  She summed the experience in just three words.

"White knuckled it," Trenerry said.

It almost looked like a pond was on the side of the road, just before the Lennox exit.  Water pooled and eventually spilled out onto the road.  Cars drove slow, and backed up, due to the rising water.

"It was a lot higher than I thought.  The water was moving faster than I thought it was going to be," Trenerry said.

Though she made it across the lane turned temporary lake, Trenerry would not recommend anyone else trying this out.

"I passed a highway patrolman.  He was backing up and I really kind of had hoped that maybe he was backing up to block off further traffic," Trenerry said.
