HSBB: Cav's Claim Back To Back Titles

Sioux Falls, SD

Baseball has always been very strong west of the Missouri River, and St. Thomas More continues to flex their muscles.

Cavalier's Skipper Jeff Pekny almost didn't get his second Gatorade bath. The Cav's and Bulldogs were scoreless until the sixth when St. Thomas More plated two runs. That is when they looked to their senior ace to bring home another title.

"It was a lot of excitement when we got those two runs across. I knew as a pitcher that all I needed was one and I could go out and give these a championship. That is all I wanted all year was to get these guys a championship," Cavaliers Senior Newt Johnson.

The Cavaliers brought the title back to Rapid City in 2013 and entered this season with a bulls-eye on their backs. After dropping their season opener to Sturgis, they then rattled off 16 straight wins while out scoring their opponents by more than 180 runs.

"It hasn't been a real difficult run, but the last three or four games to get to this point have been. We rely on our pitching and defense, that is our calling card every year. We usually have offense, but we didn't have a lot today, but we made it count when we needed it," St. Thomas More Manager Jeff Pekny said.

Five of their seniors not only went out on top, but also defended their previous title. For juniors such as, Travis Mills, he wants to complete the three-peat.

"I'll always have a special bond with my teammates. Looking back at this they will be the ones I remember. I will remember the moments during the game that changed the outcome. Looking back at the season it has been a ride, it's been fun, and I'm looking forward to doing it again next year too," Cavaliers Junior Travis Mills said.

The Cavaliers will have eight juniors returning as seniors to attempt to defend yet another title.
