Home Repairs Done By Volunteers

Sioux Falls, SD

The sound of drills and saws filled the air across Sioux Falls Tuesday, as more than 60 volunteers with the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire, made handicap accessible repairs to 8 different homes.

It's all part of the 21st Annual Repair Affair Day.

Now, a local family will be able to take in some fresh air on their brand new deck.

"It's a wonderful day. I can't believe it. I said something bad is going to happen, something bad is going to happen. Because it's just too good," homeowner Beverly Boehrns said.

Beverly Boehrns is one of the homeowners receiving help today, and says she can't believe she and her husband were actually chosen for this charitable project.

"My husband has emphysema, COPD and bad knees. He set monuments and dug graves all of his life and his knees won't take any weight," said Boehrns.

Boehrns says her husband loves to spend time outside, but can't easily get down the old cement steps on their home.
The solution was an easy project for the HBASE volunteers.

"Putting a little 5 by 10 deck on for her, so her husband can come out and enjoy the sun," Mike Metzger with Metzger Construction said.

Some of the homes selected received things like wheelchair ramps, grab bars in bathrooms, and replacement tubs with walk-in showers.

Metzger says taking the day off from regular work is worth it, to see the end results.

"Just knowing that they're able to use it and enjoy it. Makes you feel good," Metzger said.

"In my heart and in my soul I am so happy that this happened. With Father's Day and his birthday is next month. It's just going to give him a brand new summer. He's going to really love it," Boehrns said.

The projects are completely free for the homeowners.

Materials are donated through the Sioux Falls Community Development and the Home Builder's Association.
