Highway Patrol: Teenager To Be Charged In Interstate 229 Crash

Sioux Falls

A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 229 on Wednesday night injured three people near Western Avenue.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a 2011 Buick Regal was headed north on I-229 when the driver drove the car into the median and hit the end of a bridge rail. The vehicle spun into traffic and crashed into a southbound 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe.

The driver of the Buick, identified as 17-year-old Payton Stettnichs, was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled.

Both drivers suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals. An 8-year-old passenger inside the Tahoe suffered minor injuries. All three were wearing seatbelts.

Highway Patrol spokesperson Tony Mangan said charges are pending against Stettnichs.
