You may not be thinking about Thanksgiving or Christmas just yet, but for those who are in charge of feeding the needy, they're already getting started.
Feeding South Dakota and the Sioux Falls Food Pantry always see a growing need around the holidays. And while Thanksgiving is still more than a month away, organizers are already working to make sure they have enough food for the holiday season.
Feeding South Dakota and the Sioux Falls food pantry got nearly 86,000 pounds of food from a food drive earlier this summer. It's what the organizations survive off of all summer long. But it's now starting to dwindle. And with the holidays around the corner, it's time to pick up the pace.
"People will organize food drives at their business or in the neighborhood or at a community event and they'll collect non-perishable food items and bring them down to the pantry here. And well sort it and box it and inventory it and that’s what we live off of down here," Feeding South Dakota's Eastern Operations Manager Jim Dawson said.
Dawson says the organization gets the majority of its food from food drives that the public holds.
"The number of clients we’d be able to serve would be dramatically reduced if we didn't have that food drive product coming in," Dawson.
He says they have already had people calling want to help out to make sure there's enough food to fill the shelves for the holiday season.
"I think the holidays get people thinking about how much they have and what a good position they are in and their family. And they maybe think of ways to help other people during the holidays more than they do during the summer months," Dawson said.
Feeding South Dakota's website has a new Food and Fund Drive tool kit to help you organize a collection for the pantry.
