Heavy Rain Causes Evacuations In Rapid City

Heavy rain in Rapid City caused some evacuations Wednesday night after Rapid Creek spilled out of its banks.

The rain started in Rapid City Wednesday afternoon and by last night more than four inches had fallen in places. All that water ended up flooding parts of Rapid Creek.

By around 9 p.m. officials started notifying people living in a low-lying area that they may need to evacuate.

The Red Cross helped people who chose to leave their homes.

“That's what I'm worried about, my animals right now. I just grabbed what I could. My son grabbed his dogs and I grabbed my neighbor, so here we are,” Mary Guerra, who evacuated her home, said.

Fortunately, Rapid Creek did recede almost as fast as it rose.

By about 12:30 a.m., officials reopened the road leading into the area that was evacuated and the residents who left were able to get back into their homes.
